To quote Madam Zhuo Zhenxi: “The history of celadon in ancient China may well have started with the Yaozhou kilns”. Hailed as the best in the groups of Northern celadons, productions in Yaozhou kilns began in Tang Dynasty and reached unprecedented prosperity during the Northern Song Dynasty. In light of the 60th anniversary of the first excavations of the Yaozhou kiln sites in China’s Shaanxi province, the Art Institute of Chicago hosted an international symposium on Song ceramics with a focus on Yaozhou wares in March 2019. It displayed fine examples from the Shang Shan Tang collection in which ten pieces were gifted to the Art Institute by Mr. Song Tao (宋濤). This volume includes Mr.Song Tao’s marvellous and comprehensive Shang Shan Tang collection of Yaozhou wares and essays by leading scholars of Song ceramics. It illustrates the subtle beauty of Yaozhou wares and brings together insights by those who have made landmark contributions to the field.
