Yixing Purple Clay Ware
There is a special kind of clay of
deep purplish color produced at Yixing and the products made from such clay are known as
purple clay ware. After nearly a thousand years of development, the production of purple
clay wares reaches a period of maturity by the late Ming dynasty and built up its long
lasting reputation thereafter. Besides Jingdezhen, which is known as the capital for the
production of porcelain wares, Yixing is credited as the capital for the production of
pottery wares and her products are well sold in China and abroad. The present catalogue
contains 201 pieces of wares that are arranged in chronological order, with detailed
descriptions of the objects, and more than 20 pieces of rare purple clay wares unearthed
in recent years are included.
