In his forceful and rhythmic paintings, Zhao Wei uses the brush technique of light washes and dark dots, emphasizing both the contrast and interweaving of criss-cross strokes. With this sophisticated brushwork, he creates simple landscapes, usually the mountain wilderness of northern China. His preference for layered surfaces has widened the expressive power of ink painting. In recent years, he has adopted the yellow-green palette and his brushwork has become more free and spontaneous.
